Field of Dreams

I often like to introduce Mini Red to some really good movies or shows made before her time.

Several months ago we borrowed the Wonder Woman series, with Lynda Carter. Mini Red loved it and I enjoyed seeing them again. We got a kick out of them mentioning places around D.C. where I now visit for work such as The Navy Yard.

Mini Red, who was born in 1995, now has a love for Forrest Gump (1994), Steele Magnolias (1989), Far and Away (1992), Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), The Santa Clause (1994) and Christmas Vacation (1989) to name a few. She can now add Field of Dreams (1989) to that list.

We caught bits and pieces of the movie on Sunday. So when I picked up Mini Red from camp, today, and she wasn’t feeling well we set up a plan for the evening. We went to the store to get a few items and decided it would be a seafood evening starting with half pound of steamed shrimp. This would hold us over til the rice was done and the salmon baked. I asked Mini Red what movie she would like to watch and she immediately said she would like to see Field of Dreams from start to finish this time. And so we sat and ate our seafood while watching this classic.

My favorite scene is between Kevin Costner (Ray Kinsella) and James Earl Jones (Terence Mann). Ray has already spoken to Mr. Mann who has thrown him out of his home. Ray decides to try another avenue to get Mr. Mann to go with him to a baseball game a Fenway Park.

RK: I didn't want to do it this way.

TM: What the hell is that?

RK: It's a gun, what do you think it is?

TM: It's your finger!

RK: No, it's a gun.

TM: Let me see it.

RK: I'm not going to show you my gun. I'm not going to hurt you. I just need you to come with me.... What are you doing?

TM: I'll beat you with a crowbar until you go away.

RK: Wait! You can't do that. There are rules here?

TM: Oh, no. There are no rules here.

Just as Terrence Mann is about to hit Ray with the crowbar Ray says: You’re a pacifist!

TM: Shit.

I loved James Earl Jones in this part! Kevin Costner looks so young. This all makes me feel so old.

Maybe Tom Hanks in Cast Away next? She definitely isn’t ready for the Godfather series yet and everyone knows Godfather II was the best one.

Got any ideas?

  3. I may have to turn in my "Official Male" card - I've never seen Field of Dreams!

How about Airplane or Young Frankenstein?

  4. Field of Dreams is not a chick flick. It is one of those movies that has something for everyone.

Mini Red is still too young for Airplane. I'm gonna have to look into Young Frankenstein. I love Hanky Panky with Gilda Radner

  5. Some recommendations:
    1--A Christmas Story
    2--Silverado (An early Kevin Costner)
    3--Blazing Saddles
    4--Young Frankenstein
Not everyone appreciates Monty Python, but Holy Grail and Life of Brian are their two best ones.

  6. Ah, another DC movie, this one with Tom Hanks: The Man With One Red Shoe. Decent comedy, except at one point he's being chased & ducks into the (GASP!!!) Georgetown Metro station.

Incidently, Young Frankenstein is black & white (some kids have a problem with that)

  7. Lugi: Definitely A Christmas Story! Not sure if Mini Red waould be into Silverado but it I might check that one out. Any Mel Brooks is good and Monty Pyton is awesome but still maybe too old for the kiddo.
I might have to have me a movie night to review movies for her.
I loved The Man With One Red Shoe. How about St. Elmo's Fire.
Lots of younger generation m ovies are set in Bethesda... The Pacifier and The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants. Doesn't look like Bethesda.

  8. The Pacifier, with Vin Diesel? Never saw it, but isn't that fairly recent?
There was also one with Will Smith set in DC called Enemy of the State. Language may be kind of rough, & it's kind of violent.

How about Dave (Kevin Kline is the President) and An American President (with Michael Douglas in the title role).

  9. Two John Cusack flicks from the '80's: The Sure Thing and Say Anything.

  10. Lugi: Dave is the only movie I like that has Sigourney Weaver. Both Dave and Am Pres.

As for John Cusack I love Grosse Point Blank about an assasin that goes home for his HS reunion

  11. Both Dave and Am Pres are good is what I meant to finish saying. Chick flicks!

  13. This is coming a bit late and I don't even know if you will see it but how about Clueless although it might be a bit dated? Or Apollo 13 which is quite the thriller even though you know what happens. Or Big? Or West Side Story? Or The Day the Earth Stood Still for another DC based movie. Then there is Miracle on 34th Street with a young Natalie Wood (there was also a remake from the early 90's) and National Velvet with a young Elizabeth Taylor if you want to go way back. Not sure if she is old enough yet for Emma with Gywnneth Paltrow. Fantasia? Back to the Future?

  14. Thanks Jeremy those are great suggestions.
We have seen Clueless and Big is a favorite. Mini Red will often sing the West Side Story songs around the house. I own Emma and she couldn't get into it but I think she might get it soon.
I don't think I've seen The Day the Earth Stood Still so I will be looking into that as well as National Velvet.
    Thanks!

  15. West Side Story is my favorite movie of all time and, no, I am not gay! Just love the music and dancing and it takes place in my favorite place NYC, in fact in the neighborhood where I currently live although I grew up not far from where you seem to currently live.

The Day the Earth Stood Still is a classic movie from the "Cant' We All Get Along" school of nuclear disarmament in the early 50's. In addition to being a good movie it has lots of shots of downtown and residential Georgetownish looking areas which are fun just to see what DC looked like when it was still a sleepy southern town.

I went through a period of movie watching with my son of classic movies I thought he would enjoy although being a boy we tended towards the action types like Bridge Over the River Kwai and Great Escape. I also had him watch the original Psycho so he could see a movie could be very scary without lots of gore and heads being chopped off. I think at the time he was still taking baths (he was an adolescent) so we did not have to deal with showerphobia.

If I think of any more I will let you know.
